This section showcases a selection of houses we have designed and delivered across New Zealand as well as a design in progress that is yet to make it to site.
Kapiti House
This Kapiti Coast house sits on a sand dune
overlooking Kapiti Island and the Tasman Sea. The house is oriented for year round use, providing
protection from summer heat while opening to the solar gains absorbed by internal
thermal mass in the cooler months. The entire roof collects rainwater that is
stored and filtered for internal use. Space has been organized to take advantage
of views as well as creating a rhythm of solid and void across the
sand dune. The restrained material palate is slate flooring, white plastered walls with timber ceilings and sliding doors. The timber ceiling in the main living space has been formed to optimize acoustic performance with the vertical ribs extending beyond the sliding doors to provide shade from the sun and a perch for the native bird life.
Kapiti Guest House
The design works with the
contours of the sand dune and connects to the main house across a landscaped courtyard. The bedrooms' louvred walls open to the living space and nature beyond. The bathroom design is inspired by New York's subway station aesthetic. A garage and workshop are buried beneath.
Fendalton House
This Fendalton
House, replaces a significant house that had been
severely damaged beyond repair in the Canterbury earthquakes. The new house takes
advantage of the opportunities of the site opening out onto a reinstated tennis
court next to the Avon River.
Double height spaces have been designed to modulate
the sunlight with thermal and acoustic insulation maximized to create warm and
cosey living spaces. A winter garden atrium connects the two main wings of the house featuring an elegantly crafted grand stair bathed in light refined by the exposed steel structure with tubular louvres providing ever changing shadows across the white interior.
The front garden features a tea house pavilion inspired by folded origami forms while complimenting the geometry of the atrium structure and the window eyebrows adjacent.
TIMELAPSE OF TEAHOUSE CONSTRUCTION
Waimari Beach House - a work in progress
This 3 - storey home has been designed to sit tall on the Christchurch coastline overlooking the sand dunes and out to the South Pacific Ocean.
Our client desires a house that evokes the feel of living on the Greek Island of Santorini. Our approach has been to treat the house as a small village in its own right. With compressed passage ways and stairs within a central core connecting between open living spaces that link to the exterior terraces which have been orientated to maximize the views of the ocean, the Southern Alps and the Port Hills Caldera!
The house has a typically restrained material palate with white plastered walls contrasting with blonded timber, carpet and stone floor coverings providing a neutral background for a large family to enjoy.
